Studio portrait of 3652 Private (Pte) Robert Francis Crothers Wilkinson, 8th Reinforcements, 17th Battalion, of Auburn, NSW. Pte Wilkinson enlisted on 11 August 1915 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Aeneas on 20 December 1915. He was killed in action on 9 May 1918, near Framvillers, France, aged 24 years. Prior to his enlistment in the AIF, Pte Wilkinson enlisted in the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF), on 25 August 1914. He returned to Australia in May 1915 with rheumatics and was discharged as medically unfit yet recovered to enlist in the AIF. He also had two younger brothers who served with the AIF. Both returned to Australia.
