Description
Studio portrait of Margaret (Peg) Dircks, signed by the artist Harold Cazneaux, a family friend who had taken the photograph during Margaret's service with the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD). Margaret Dircks studied science at Sydney University and graduated in 1937 and took a position with soap makers, Lever Brothers, in their chemical laboratory at Alexandria, Sydney. In 1942 she volunteered with the Voluntary Aid Detachment and was selected to be one of a very few ambulance drivers. Her family relates that in order to practice driving she borrowed a David Jones delivery truck and drove it around Sydney until she had gained the amount of experience required.
