History / Summary

Military Payment Certificates (MPC) were created and issued in US occupied areas in an attempt to prevent black-market activities and to ensure that the American dollar remained insulated. Despite being intended for use only by American service personnel and a few authorised civilians, MPCs soon filtered into the larger local economy. Once this had occurred, a new series of MPC would be released. Those who were authorised to have MPCs would swap their old notes for the new issue MPCs, while the old series, now worthless, was withdrawn. There were 13 issues of MPC officially released, beginning with 461 and ending with 692.

Series 681 was issued 11 August 1969 and withdrawn 7 October 1970.
