Junior Civil Liaison Officers, Freedy Ong of Malacca and 'Smithy' Yap of Kuala Lumpur, both attached to 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR), chat over a cigarette with 2/4492 Sergeant (Sgt) Ray Simpson of Crows Nest, NSW, (right) in a rubber plantation, after finishing two weeks of 'jungle bashing' with A Company, 2RAR. Sgt Simpson also served in Korea as a Corporal and Sgt with 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) from 1951-1954. He also served as 217622 Warrant Officer 2 in South Vietnam with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) and completed three tours in 1962-1963, 1964 and 1967-1970. While serving in South Vietnam he won the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) which was gazetted by the Commonwealth of Australia on 4 November 1965 and the Victoria Cross (VC) which was gazetted by the Commonwealth of Australia on 28 August 1969.
