Description
A shrewd operator, 3/2653 (VX69757) Gunner (Gnr) Bob Heveren of Prahran, Vic, of B Troop, 105th Field Battery, uses an old wheel barrow to save wear and tear on his shoulders as he carts cases of 25 pounder shells to the B Troop gun site. A QF 25 pounder field gun and a communications aerial are in the background. Part of the recoil housing of another QF 25 pounder is visible in the foreground. On the night of the 1st and 2nd January 1956, these QF 25 pounder field guns were the first, since 1945, to be fired in anger against an enemy. Gnr Heveren also served in Korea with 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) in 1951-1952 where he was wounded in action, and with the 2/5th Cavalry Commando Squadron in WW2.
