Sapper (Spr) Carson, (left) about to push the plunger that will trigger a big explosion, as another batch of 60 kilogram bombs are destroyed. These bombs were left over by the Japanese at the end of the Second World War and it is now the responsibility of the men of 4 Troop, Royal Australian Engineers, attached to 11th Independent Field Squadron Royal Engineers, to locate, remove and destroy them. Sitting in their heavily reinforced blast shelter from the left are 2/5509 Spr Frank Carson, of Granville, NSW; 2/35014 Captain John Newton, of Newcastle, NSW; Sergeant Len Knowles, of Stoke on Trent, UK; 3/3826 Spr (later Lance Corporal) Don Stevens, of Regent, Vic; 3/11147 Corporal Vic Pollock, of Petersham, NSW; and ordinance adviser, Wing Commander Bill Pointon (right), Royal Air Force, of Hawkes Bay New Zealand.
