Armed with a US M1 .30 Calibre Carbine, 6/776 2nd Lieutenant (2nd Lt) (later Major) Harry Smith, 23, of Glenorchy, Tas (centre), C Company, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR), having a discussion with two of his men, Owen gunner, 6/985 Private Ian Lloyd, 25, of Ulverstone, Tas (right) and Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Sam Farmer, 20, of Brisbane, Qld (left). L Cpl Farmer is armed with the new Fabrique Nationale (FN) Self Loading Rifle (SLR). 2nd Lt Smith later served in South Vietnam as a Major, commanding D Company, 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR) from 1966-1967. He fought at the Battle of Long Tan on 18 August 1966, where he was awarded the Military Cross, on 21 December 1966.
