Description
An AIF recruiting lantern slide featuring "Private Arthur Cripps, Boxer". 17612 Driver Arthur Cecil Cripps, a 37 year old farmer from Nanango, Qld, enlisted on 15 August 1916 and embarked on 10 May 1917 with reinforcements of the Field Company Engineers. He was later promoted to the rank of sergeant and returned to Australia in June 1919. He boxed as a middleweight and during his career won 33 bouts, lost 12 and drew three. This slide is one of a series used in a 1917 recruiting campaign to encourage sportsmen to enlist in a sportsmen's unit, such as had been successfully raised in England. The concept was not as popular in Australia.
