Slide of Private Billy Longworth - Swimmer. William Longworth was a champion swimmer at State and National level, who had travelled to Stockholm to compete at the 1912 Olympic Games, but withdrew due to ill health. In 1915 he enlisted as Driver with the service number of 9976 and in 1918 was commissioned as a Lieutenant. This slide is one of a series used in a 1917 recruiting campaign to encourage sportsmen to enlist in a sportsmen's unit, such as had been successfully raised in England. The concept was not as popular in Australia.
