Description

Three women walk past a bicycle along a dusty road leading towards a range of mountains, typical of Afghanistan's rugged terrain. This area, about 60km north of Kabul, changed hands repeatedly between Taliban and opposition forces during Afghanistan's civil war. The women wear the full Afghan burqa, a garment designed to cover the head and body, and incorporating a crocheted semi-opaque panel over the upper part of the face. The Taliban regime required all women to wear the burqa.
