Description

Ahmed Shah Massoud, leader of the Northern Alliance fighting the Taliban, looks out of the window of an aircraft as it flies over the Hindu Kush, a mountain range in north eastern Afghanistan. Massoud had been a key guerilla fighter (Mujahideen) resisting the Soviet Union's occupation of Afghanistan, before becoming military leader of the forces opposing the subsequent Taliban regime. He was killed by suicide bombers associated with al-Qaeda on 9 September 2001, two days before the attacks on New York and Washington, DC.
