Description
Portrait of Ahmed Shah Massoud, leader of the Northern Alliance. Massoud was known as the 'Lion of the Panjshir' after leading the Mujahideen resistance to the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan from the Panjshir valley in the north west of the country. He then became leader of the resistance to the Taliban regime. He was assassinated by suicide bombers associated with al-Qaeda on 9 September, 2001, two days before the attacks on New York and Washington, DC.
