Description

Six Afghan men play in a buzkashi match. Buzkashi, the traditional Afghan national sport, is played on horseback, and involves attempting to grab a beheaded calf or goat carcass. The men are holding small whips which they use both on their horses and their opponents. Buzkashi was discouraged by the Taliban regime, but became popular in areas where they had been removed from control, following the American and Australian intervention in the Afghanistan civil war after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001.
