Description
A Northern Alliance soldier holds an ex-Soviet AKM rifle and a marigold flower behind his back. Charikar, a market town and capital of Parvan province, was captured by the Northern Alliance as they pushed towards the Taliban controlled capital, Kabul, aided by Australian and American special forces and by American air strikes. The United States, with support from Australia, intervened in the Afghan civil war following the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001.
