Description

A former military base stands deserted outside Mazar-e Sharif. The perimeter wall is inscribed with the message 'Do not deal with explosive items. They may kill you.' The Soviet Union used Mazar-e Sharif as an air base during their nine year occupation of the country. The city was later captured by the Taliban. Mazar-e Sharif was captured by Northern Alliance forces, with American and Australian assistance, in November 2001 following the American led invasion of Afghanistan, which followed the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001.
