Description

Northern Alliance soldiers at their Barak base listen to radio news of America's entry into the war in Afghanistan. The American intervention in Afghanistan, which started with air strikes on 7 October 2001, followed the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington DC of 11 September 2001. Afghanistan's Taliban regime was accused of providing shelter for al-Qaeda and its leader, Osama Bin Laden. The American intervention, with support from Australian army, naval and air force units, decisively shifted the balance of the country's civil war in favour of the Northern Alliance, and against the previously dominant Taliban.
