History / Summary

This flag was made by Miss Annie Williams in a show of patriotism upon the 1915 departure of her then boyfriend, Errol James Smith. Prior to enlisting in the Army on 30 June 1915, 3119 Private Smith worked as a sleeping car conductor. He served with 2 Battalion and was promoted to lance corporal before returning to Australia on 5 March 1919. Miss Williams and Smith later married in the early 1920s.
