Informal portrait of 415138 Sergeant (Sgt) Leonard Leslie Grist, 8 Squadron, of Collie, WA. Sgt Gates enlisted on 21 July 1941 with the RAAF and was killed accidentally on 3 May 1943 at Canberra Fairbairn Aerodrome, ACT, aged 29 years. At the time of his death Sgt Grist was the pilot of A9-258 Beaufort aeroplane. Sgt Grist had overshot the runway whilst attempting a forced landing due to engine failure. He attempted to a re-take-off but the aeroplane stalled, crashed and burnt. The observer was also killed and three other crew members were injured.
