Description
Exhumation of bodies in a corn field. Three members of an international crime scene investigation team and two East Timorese workers, observe as a third East Timorese man digs the grave site. The INTERFET members in the background are, left to right: Corporal Mark Anderson, New Zealand MP; and unidentified pathologist wearing white pants, t-shirt and cap and carrying a camera; and Staff Sergeant Shayne Towers-Hammond, Australian Army. In April 1999, up to 200 East Timorese people were murdered at a Liquica catholic church by members of the pro-Indonesian militia, and Indonesian soldiers. After the massacre, many of the victim’s bodies were moved from the church area, in an attempt to hide the scale of the atrocity.
