Full dress tunic : Artillery, New South Wales Military Forces
Dark blue wool twill tunic with dark orange stand collar edged all round with gold bullion lace, with embroidered gold bullion artillery grenade collar badges on a red ground at each edge. Shoulder straps of twisted double round gold cord and a medium sized brass New South Wales Military Forces button. Lower third of each front section of sleeve is made from dark blue superfine and decorated with round gold cord Austrian knots traced with gold Russia braid. Above the left knot, on wool twill section of the sleeve, is an embroidered gold bullion badge for the best shot in a Battery of Artillery. The badge depicts crossed guns surmounted by a crown on a dark blue ground. On the right sleeve above the knot are the embroidered bullion badges for the rank of quartermaster sergeant; an eight-pointed gold star on a scarlet ground surmonted by a gold field gun on a dark blue ground. There are no sergeant's chevrons. Left front of tunic piped with dark orange wool twill. Six large New South Wales Military Forces buttons made by 'GREEN & BAKER BIRMINGHAM' and 'C. ANDERSON SYDNEY' at the front and two at the back waist. Partially open vent at the centre back skirt, piped with dark orange wool twill. At each side of the vent a stitched pleat below the waist button and a three-pointed flap decorated with three military buttons and edged with round gold cord traced with narrow gold Russia braid. The flap is in dark blue superfine. The collar, sleeves and body of the tunic lined with grey cotton twill, the skirt with black cotton sateen. Faintly written at the collar appears to be 'MMM'. Neck fastens with a single black ferrous metal hook and eye.
Unusual tunic worn by a senior NCO of the New South Wales Artillery.
