The Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR) ...
The Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR) Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Peter (?) English (left), is one of the 'oldest soldiers' in the unit. 'Sarmajor' English has served seventeen years in the Australian Army. In the Second World War he fought in the Middle East and in New Guinea, and is now in Korea. WO1 English, who lives at Ashgrove, Qld, is shown instructing 6598 Private (Pte) Frederick Benjamin Pennington of Hobart, Tas, in the use of the Owen gun. Pte Pennington has been in the army for three years. Both he and WO1 English arrived in Korea three months ago in the troopship New Australia. Pte Pennington was a cleaner for the Tasmanian Government Railways before he joined up. (Original British Commonwealth Forces Korea (BCFK) Public Relations caption). (There is no Peter English on the Korean War Nominal Roll, however there is a 1136 WO1 Gordon Edward English of 1RAR, who also served in the Second World War)
