This claustrophobic spot is an underground telephone switchboard in the 1st Commonwealth Division's Kansas defence line in Korea. It is in the bowels of a hill, about eight feet below ground to protect vital communication links from possible bombing or shelling. 34911 Private (Pte) Arthur William Foreman of Arnold, Vic, is at work repairing telephone breakdowns caused by water. Although the bunker is deep in the earth and roofed with timber, rock and water-repellant tarred canvas, the torrential rain has caused it to be inches deep in water. Pte Foreman was a stock controller for James Richardson's Hotels before he joined the Australian Army 18 months ago. Now he is an indoor linesman for the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), and has been in Korea for seven months.
