Description

The fuel stoves, or 'choofers', which warm the barrack huts of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), at Gallipoli Camp in Korea, are fed from jerry cans placed on stands outside the huts. Filling one of these cans from his company fuel point is 52675 Private (Pte) Owen James 'Mac' McCarthy, of Palmyra, Fremantle, WA. Before he enlisted in the Australian Army Pte McCarthy worked on his uncle's orchard at Capel, WA. He played rover for the Capel Football Club and was a member of the Capel Badminton and Rifle Clubs.
