Description
'Choofer mechanics' is the unofficial name applied to the men of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR) in Korea, who look after the maintenance of the 'choofers', the petrol stoves which supply the warmth for the canteens and offices and barrack huts in which the Australian soldiers work and live. They also look after the heating apparatus for the shower rooms and with temperatures consistently below zero, this is a responsible and difficult task. Here 28112 Private Richard (Dick) Alfred Chivers of Newcastle, NSW, adjusts a tin of burning diesel fuel under a drum, to thaw out the frozen shower water.
