Campbell, Edward (Lieutenant, b.1917 - d.1992)
Collection relating to the Second World War service of VX15145 (377317, 294862) Lieutenant Edward Campbell, 2/2 Pioneer Battalion, Second Australian Imperial Force, at sea, 1941-1945.
Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one photograph, one letter in shorthand, one translation of letter, and one copy of "Pitman's Pocket Shorthand Dictionary". The photograph is a portrait of Lieutenant Campbell, and was taken in October 1941. The letter is dated 20 September 1945, and was written by Lieutenant Campbell to his sister and brother, Margaret and David Campbell, while he was returning to Australia on HMS Ruler after being a prisoner of war of the Japanese. In his letter, Lieutenant Campbell writes about his impatience to be at home, his recovery from malnourishment, his travel arrangements, anticipating eating home-cooked food, and looking forward to seeing friends and family. The copy of "Pitman's Pocket Shorthand Dictionary" was used by Margaret Campbell to initially translate the letter. It contains notes and friends’ autographs on several pages.
