Portrait of 2795 Sergeant (Sgt) William Francis Skinner, D Company, 59th Battalion, of Gippsland, Vic. Sgt Skinner enlisted on 19 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ulysses on 27 October 1915 with the 6th Reinforcements, 22nd Battalion. He was killed in action on 31 August 1918, near Peronne, France, aged 20 years. He had three uncles who also served in the AIF. They were: 1114 Private (Pte) George Charles Pearson, 31st Battalion, killed in action on 12 July 1916 at Fleurbaix, France, aged 24 years; 345 Pte John Leslie Pearson, 3rd Machine Gun Company, killed in action 21 June 1916 in France, aged 19 years, and 3900 Pte Robert Fernley Pearson, 6th Battalion, killed in action 21 June 1915, Pozieres, France, aged 26 years.
