Description

Studio portrait taken shortly before the 19th Battalion departed for Gallipoli. Identified, left to right: 385 Corporal (Cpl) Albert Edward Carroll, 19th Battalion, of Orange, NSW. Cpl Carroll, a fireman by trade, enlisted on 1 May 1915. He was killed in action in the second battle at Bullecourt on 3 May 1917 aged 23 years; 270 Private (Pte) Stephen George Lowe, 19th Battalion, of North Brighton, Vic. Pte Lowe, a butcher by trade, enlisted on 4 March 1915 and was awarded the Military Medal (MM) on 21 October 1918; 207 Pte Arnold Hetherington Dent, 19th Battalion, of Abbotsford, NSW. Pte Dent, a wool-buyer by trade, enlisted on 1 March 1915 and returned to Australia on 22 February 1917. All three soldiers embarked on A40 HMAT Ceramic on 25 June 1915 from Melbourne.
