Description

Temperature gauge in a brass case. A thermostat is attached to the guage via a 3mm diameter copper tube. The tube is coiled for storage.
The face of the instrument is marked :
S. Smith & Sons Ltd

The gauge measures from 0° to 100° C. The serial number 20878/9 is at the top of the dial.

The instrument is 56 mm diameter on outside dimension and 52 mm diameter on the main body. It appears that the whole instrument was black enamel. This enamel survives only in part. The thermostat is 61.4 mm long with an 11 mm shaft. It is connected by means of a hexagonal bolt.

History / Summary

World War I aerial engines were air or water cooled. The temperature gauge was an esssential instrument for determining the efficient running of the engine.
