15891 Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) John Samuel Hyland (wearing beret in front row), a member of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV), poses with a group of Montagnard tribesmen during a training exercise. Recruited from the hill tribes of the Central Highlands, South Vietnam, the Montagnards were trained by members of the AATTV and United States military advisers in modern military techniques including strategy and tactics, map reading, field craft and weapon handling. The Montagnards of Mike Force, part of the Special Forces of the Army of the Republic of South Vietnam (ARVN) were trained to participate in operations against the enemy. WOII Hyland iwas Platoon Commander of 223 Company, 2nd Battalion Mike Force, which was attached to Detachment B20, Company B, 5th Special Forces, USA Army.
