Description

Two minarets, one of which has fallen to the ground, are seen surrounded by debris following the tsunami disaster of 26 December 2004. Banda Aceh was hit hard by both the initial earthquake, which occurred off the coast of northern Sumatra, and the tsunami which followed. Australian military forces were deployed to Banda Aceh, under Operation Sumatra Assist, to provide humanitarian relief following the disaster, which killed over 110,000 people in Indonesia.
