Description

Two members of the Indonesian Army carry the plastic wrapped body of a victim of the tsunami of 26 December 2004, strung from a pole. A soldier holding a rifle, and a man, wearing a T-shirt bearing a portrait of former president Suharto, watch as they stand amongst the ruins of Banda Aceh, capital of Aceh province. The province, troubled by an ongoing struggle between the Indonesian military and separatist forces, was the closest land area to the epicentre of the devastating earthquake and the tsunami that followed. Australian military forces were deployed to Banda Aceh, under Operation Sumatra Assist, to help with medical care and the restoration of basic services such as safe drinking water, following the disaster, which killed over 110,000 people in Indonesia.
