Description

Local people standing in front of a noticeboard in Banda Aceh public hospital read the numerous messages and photographs posted by friends and relatives of people missing since the earthquake and tsunami of 26 December 2004. Banda Aceh was hit hard by both the initial earthquake, which occurred off the coast of northern Sumatra, and the tsunami which followed. Australian military forces were deployed to Banda Aceh, under Operation Sumatra Assist, to provide humanitarian relief following the disaster, which killed over 110,000 people in Indonesia.
