Description

A large pile of bodies in bodybags lies in a hastily dug mass grave on the outskirts of the city, in the aftermath of the tsunami of 26 December 2004. There was considerable concern about the prospect of disease being spread by the large number of unburied dead following the tsunami, which killed over 110,000 people in Indonesia. Initial relief efforts concentrated on burying victims of the disaster as fast as possible. Australian military forces were deployed to Aceh under Operation Sumatra Assist, to participate in the relief effort.
