Group portrait of nine soldiers which includes the Burton brothers thought to be front row third left and fifth left. 123 Corporal (Cpl) Gordon Burton, 8th Field Company Engineers who enlisted on 21 August 1914 and returned to Australia on 5 April 1919, and 149 Lance Corporal (LCpl) Archibald Trenery Burton, 12th Field Company Engineers, who enlisted on 1 September 1914 and died of wounds on 19 October 1917 at Ypres, Belgium, aged 33 years. Also identified, second from left, back row, is 137 Second Corporal (2Cpl) Owen Kevin Hughes, 8th Field Company Engineers, of West Footscray, Vic. An electrician and plumber prior to enlisting on 21 August 1914, he later served with the 2nd Field Company Engineers and returned to Australia on 5 April 1919. All the identified men originally served with the 2nd Field Company Engineers and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Orvieto on 21 October 1914. The group is clothed in officially issued cardigan jackets which were often part of the first official army uniform issue. The verso of the photograph reads "This photo was taken at Limanus [Lemnos] Island for our spell after 5 months fighting. The only 9 left in my section that left Melbourne."
