Description

Studio portrait of NX60143 Private (Pte) Harry Bernard Longley, 2/29th Battalion, of Cavan, NSW. He was the son of Ernest Warren (Ernie) Longley, who had fought in the First World War, and Kathleen Longley, of Yass, NSW. Pte Longley enlisted on 23 July 1940 and died in Borneo on 5 July 1945, whilst a prisoner of war (POW), aged 22 years. Pte Longley was one of over 2000 Allied POW held in the Sandakan POW camp in north Borneo, having been transferred there from Singapore as a part of B Force. The 1494 POWs that made up B Force, were transported from Changi on 7 July 1942 on board the tramp ship Ubi Maru, arriving in Sandakan Harbour on 18 July 1942.
