Description
Studio portrait of 2480 Sergeant (Sgt) George Wallace Macalpine, 4th Battalion, originally serving with the 5th Reinforcements, 20th Battalion, of Mosman, NSW. Prior to enlisting in the AIF on 4 July 1915 he served with the 18th Infantry, Citizens Military Forces. Sgt Macalpine embarked from Sydney on 6 September 1915 aboard HMAT Ballarat. He served in the Middle East and France. He died of pneumonia on 28 February 1919 in Le Havre, France, aged 23 years. His brother, Captain Roderick Archibald Macalpine, also served with the 4th Battalion, and was awarded the Military Cross (MC) in April 1917. He returned to Australia on 6 July 1919.
