Studio portrait of 416025 Sergeant (later Flight Lieutenant) Joseph Burlington Hughes III, who enlisted with the 1st Elementary Flying Training School (1 EFTS) on 3 March 1941. He had an unfortunate accident while trialling a young pilot in an Anson aircraft, who crashed on landing into trees near the field. Hughes was thought dead until he spoke to the Minister performing the last rights over his body. Hughes eventually recovered but had broken virtually every bone in his body. He died in July of 1990 aged 70.
