Russo - Japanese War Medal (1904-1905) : Private N T Davies, 3 RAR
Russo - Japanese War Medal (1904-1905). The obverse of the medal shows crossed Japanese Army and Navy flags with a chrysanthemum crest above and a pawlonia crest below. The reverse shows a shield with a Japanese inscription, within a palm and laurel wreath. An inscription on the suspender translates as 'War Medal'.
Collected by 4/400149 Private Noel Terence Davies whilst on leave in Tokyo in February 1953 during his service in the Korean War. Davies was born in Llanelly, Wales on 17 December 1927. He served with the British Merchant Navy on Atlantic convoys during the last nine months of the Second World War. Davies later enlisted in the Australian Army and served during the Korean War with Assault Pioneer Platoon, 3 Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment from November 1952 to November 1953. The Russian - Japanese War (1904-1905) was the result of an imperialistic rivalry between Russia and Japan for dominance in Korea and Manchuria. Japan's defeat of Russia marked the first time an Asian power had defeated a western power in modern times, and established Japan as a world power.
