Red Cross fund raising badge : Miss Doris Grey
Description
Small bronze fundraising badge, in aid of the Italian Red Cross, in the shape of a map of Italy bearing an enamelled red cross in the centre with a raised date '1918' above it. The map is suspended by a ring from a small bar, with brooch pin back, bearing the Italian word 'AVANTI' (forwards).
History / Summary
This fund raising badge sold in aid of the Italian Red Cross in 1918, was bought by an Australian Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurse, Doris Grey. During the First World War the New South Wales branch of the Red Cross raised 67,577 pounds for the Italian Red Cross through the sale of various badges and through other fund raising events.
