St Patrick medallion, Lough Derg : Found on a dead Australian soldier, Gallipoli
The obverse of the medallion is similar to the image used on the Miraculous Medal, with the Virgin Mary on the obverse, standing on a globe and crushing the head of a serpent beneath her foot. Rays shine from her hands and a halo of nine stars is around her head. Around her is written 'O MARY CONCEIVED WITHOUT SIN PRAY FOR US WHO HAVE RECOURSE TO THEE'. On the reverse is an image of St Patrick banishing the snakes from Ireland with his staff. Around the top of the medallion is written 'SOUVENIR OF LOUGH DERG'. The medallion has a split ring in the top
This religious medallion was collected from the body of an Australian soldier during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915 by a Turkish soldier. This man's son later passed it to an Australian who was working in Turkey. Lough Derg is a lake in Ireland, which is a place of pilgrimage associated with St Patrick.
