Mrs Ethel Newman (fourth from left) and her two sons Robert and William enjoying a picnic, along with two Australian airmen. The Newman family opened their home and provided hospitality to hundreds of airmen from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and Poland between August 1941 and 1945. This was part of a voluntary organisation known as the Lady Ryder Hospitality Scheme, set up to ensure that hospitality was provided for airmen arriving in Britain after graduating from the Empire Air Training Scheme. The airmen are two of the three airmen who were staying with the Newmans at the time, Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) Ansell Edward Britten-Jones, of Toorak Gardens, SA, 194 Squadron, RAF, who was accidentally killed in India on 15 April 1943; 401478 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Daniel Randall Dossitor, of Kew, Vic; 416039 Flt Lt Ronald Ernest Whitington, of Mount Barker, SA.
