The Army Field Mess in the compound at the rear of the Free World Building, Cholon, Saigon. The Mess provided 'C' Rations and 'food' (concocted from bully beef) during the initial defence of the building; all United States troops in the building and the RAAF were on 24 hour guard. After several days the RAAF No 2 Squadron came to their assistance with hand grenades (from Phan Rang), flak jackets and food. The RAAF at Vung Tau sent Owen guns via No 9 Squadron helicopter, delivered to the roof of the roof of the building. The Americans kept the building and compound lit up for the RAAF by dropping flares. The Australians also kept guard at doors, windows and up on the roof. The areas of Cholon directly in front of us and also to the north and south were subjected to attack by the South Vietnamese Air Force Sky Raider aircraft.
