History / Summary

Associated with the service of 5263 Driver William Gordon Dall, born in Dunedin, New Zealand. Dall, a station overseer, enlisted in the AIF in Liverpool, NSW on 6 June 1915. He embarked with the 10th reinforcements of 1 Field Artillery Brigade from Melbourne aboard HMAT Hororata on 27 September. He served in France before being invalided to England on 31 January 1917 where he was admitted to Southwark Military Hospital for treatment for influenza and foot related injuries. Dall returned to France and rejoined his unit on 27 June. However on 15 October he suffered severe exposure to gas and was again sent to England for treatment. On 5 January 1918 Dall married nurse Flora Frederika Wenyon in London. He was again admitted to hospital in England later that year where he received treatment for dysentery. At the end of the war Dall received three months bookkeeping training with his father-in-law, Edwin James Wenyon, a physician in Dundee, Scotland as part of the AIF Education Scheme. He and his wife then embarked for Australia on 6 August 1919 aboard HMAT Berrima. Dall’s identity disc penny eventually found its way into general circulation and was collected by a member of the public when they received it in change during the Second World War.
