312600 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Kevin John Sharpley, of Sunbury, Vic, (left foreground) and 51626 Flt Lt Robert Max Hayes, of Cottesloe, WA, (right). Watching them is door gunner 39888 Corporal (Cpl) Victor Edward (Vic) Williams, of East Brighton, Vic, still with his flying helmet on and sitting in the helicopter, playing a game of chess whilst they wait during standby duty at Vung Tau airfield. The crew on standby duty usually do their pre-flight checks on the helicopter and with all systems at ‘go’ all that is needed to become airborne is to start up and don their flying helmets. Flt Lt Hayes was later awarded Air Force Cross (AFC) 23 January 1969, Mentioned in Despatches (MID) 23 November 1967. He died on 17 July 1969, Pearce, WA.
