Hand-coloured, black-and-white studio portrait of 3511 Private (Pte) Walter Ehrenfried Arnold, 32nd Battalion. A blacksmith from Port Pirie, South Australia, prior to enlistment , he embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 12 August 1916 aboard HMAT Ballarat (A70) for Plymouth, England. Following training in England he joined his battalion on the Western Front near Fricourt, France, in mid-February 1917. He was appointed Lance Corporal (L Cpl) on 1 November 1917. L Cpl Arnold was awarded the Military Medal (MM) for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty for his actions during an attack near Morlancourt on the night of 28-29 July 1918. Four days later he was promoted to Temporary Corporal. Cpl Arnold was killed in action near Etricourt, France, on 29 September 1918. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. He was aged 29 years.
