Outdoor portrait of N387872 Private (Pte) Charles Henry Shepherd of Paddington, NSW. Pte Shepherd was killed while on duty at Cowra Breakout. On 5 August 1944, 1100 Japanese prisoners of war attempted to escape from the camp. There were three Australians killed on the night of the escape. N103951 Private (Pte) Benjamin Hardy, Private (Pte) N103951 Ralph Jones, and N387872 Private Charles Henry Shepherd. Lieutenant (Lt) VX52878 Harry Doncaster was killed later on in the afternoon as he took part in the search for Japanese prisoners. 231 Japanese died as a result of the attempted escape.
