Description
The commander of the United Nations troops in Cyprus, General (Gen) Kodendera Thimayya (right), talks with Sergeant (Sgt) Robert Macdonald, of Lithgow, NSW, (left) during a tour of peace force units. Sgt Macdonald was a member of the United Nations Civilian Police (UNCIVPOL), attached to the United Nations Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). Gen Thimayya, a former Chief of Staff of the Indian Army, was appointed commander of the force on its establishment in April 1964. He died while still commander, in December 1965. UNFICYP was intended to restrain the violence between Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities.
