An unidentified Australian soldier performs sentry duties at Junction Point Charlie (JP-C), a United Nations (UN) observation post in East Timor. On his left sleeve the soldier is wearing a circular blue United Nations cloth patch and a rectangular patch with the Australian flag and the word AUSTRALIA below the flag. JP-C is located approximately four kilometres from Tonobibi, on the border of East and West Timor. It was established to enable troops of the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) Peacekeeping Force (PKF) to monitor theTentara Nasional Indonesia (TNI) (Indonesian National Army) post, situated directly opposite, whilst providing security for merchants conducting trade at the border market. The post was a site of constant tension, with militia groups frequently attempting to disrupt traders. JP-C was also used to observe East Timorese refugees returning from camps in West Timor. In August 2003 the post was handed over to an Timor-Leste Border Patrol Unit (BPU).
