The RAN guided missile destroyer HMAS Hobart (II) at Subic Bay naval base, Philippines, after being hit by United States Air Force (USAF) rockets fired by an F-4 fighter aircraft, on 17 June 1968. HMAS Hobart and other US Navy warships had been engaged in surveillance of a North Vietnamese radar monitoring station on Tiger Island, east of Cap Lay, when, early in the morning the missiles were fired. The first missile struck Hobart amidships on the starboard side, the next two missiles being fired three and a half minutes later. Two men were killed by the attack, R54257 Chief Electrician Weapons Radio Raymond Henry Hunt and R66558 Ordinary Seaman Quartermaster Gunner Raymond John Butterworth, and others were wounded. The ship spent four weeks in Subic Bay being repaired and by 26 July 1968 was back on the gunline ten miles south east of Da Nang.
