UNTAC Base sign : 2 Signal Squadron, Force Communications Unit, Battambang, Cambodia
Large galvanised iron sign nailed to a wooden frame. The face of sign is painted UN blue with white lettering: 2 SIGNAL SQDN HQ / FORCE COMMUNICATIONS UNIT. The frame is constructed from 3.5 cm square undressed timber. The metal on the back of the sign is stamped 'RIVER BRAND / KAWASAKI / SGCH / 0.40 mm / Z18 / 3672'. The white paint is flaking and has disappeared from sections of the lettering.
Galvanised iron sign which was mounted above the entrance to the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) Force Communications Unit (FCU) Headquarters at Battambang, Cambodia. Over 500 Australian troops served as part of a 15,000-strong United Nations peacekeeping force in Cambodia from 1992 to prepare the country for free elections in 1993. The Australian contingent provided the military and civil communications infrastructure for the operation. 2 Signal Squadron of the Australian FCU maintained a Headquarters at Battambang, located in the northwest of Cambodia, and a region of continued Khmer Rouge presence. During the lead up to the May 1993 elections, the Australian Squadron shared the base with a Malaysian Infantry unit, an Indian Medical unit, a Pakistani Logistics unit, a Thai Engineering unit and an Australian Army Black Hawk helicopter Squadron.
